The professional worlds of STEM are often dominated by white men, but scientist and Gunditjmara woman Dr Misty Jenkins is strong in her belief that diversity of all kinds is a powerful force driving innovation in science.
She currently provides opportunities for Aboriginal science and medical students interested in doing a placement with her by hosting and mentoring them in her laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
The recent winner of the second Indigenous STEM Awards’ Professional Career Achievement Award, Dr Jenkins researches a type of white blood cells that protect the body from cancer.
