Retirees, who spend their retirement traveling around Australia in caravans, have been dubbed the “grey nomads”. The government is now urging them to make their retirement a more active pursuit and take part in the Indigenous Volunteer program. The program currently matches the skills of volunteers to aboriginal communities. However, volunteers must be open minded, adventurous and patient. Susie Lowe co-ordinates the volunteers for the Mt Theo project, which runs an indigenous night school in the Walpree Tribe. She spoke with about the experience that has prevented her from using another retiree. “Grey Nomad” Pat Mullins also spoke about the viability of retirees volunteering in indigenous communities.
