Greenslide: How the Greens will deal with their new power in both houses
In what Bob Brown has called a “Greenslide”, the Greens now hold the balance of power in the senate, and they’ve also claimed their first seat in the House of Representatives. Now that they wield significant power in both houses, the party is entering a new phase, and one that may not be without its own pitfalls. The first challenge is the possibility of having to deal with a government from the opposite end of the political spectrum. A short time ago I spoke to one participant in the “Greenslide”, Lee Rhiannon, who looks to have claimed a NSW senate seat for the Greens. I asked her how it felt to be a senator, without knowing what kind of government would take power.
