Greens push ahead with coal seam gas bill despite Abbott backdown
It was starting to look like a case of very strange bedfellows for awhile – the Greens, the Coalition and farmers all uniting against coal seam gas miners. It all started last Friday when Tony Abbott suggested to Sydney radio host, Alan Jones, that farmers should be able to say no to miners exploring for coal seam gas on their property. The Greens leapt on that, announcing they would introduce a private members bill in support of Mr Abbott and farmers. But just as it was looking like Tony Abbott had been well and truly wedged on the issue he unequivocally announced today he wouldn’t be supporting the Greens’ motion. So what now for the Greens and for farmers? The Greens’ spokesperson on mining, Senator Larissa Waters, joins The Wire.
