Government sees the light, returns legal services funding

After steadfastly ignoring the pleas of the legal community to restore legal aid funding cut in 2013, the Attorney General has returned around $25 million to the sector. Until recently there had been a growing campaign to reverse cuts to Aboriginal Legal Services and community legal centres in particular. In his announcement of policy Attorney General George Brandis acknowledged a growing conversation about the issue of domestic violence, saying the funding will help victims seek the help they need. So does this indicate a change of heart by the government or just a convenient shift to ward off criticism?
