Government data rings alarm bells for roo populations, ecologists
Kangaroos have been nominated for listing as threatened species in NSW after a new independent report suggests the national icon is under threat. In a review of government data, ecologists have found as little as 1 or 2% of kangaroo populations could remain in some regions.
The findings coincide with a recent report by the NSW government that also identified several areas in which kangaroo numbers are currently below their sustainable level or have “fallen significantly”. In a volatile debate largely split between radical environmentalists and industry groups, ecologists behind the report say they are sticking their necks out to talk about the issue.
