Environment Minister Greg Hunt is being accused of marginalising the concerns of Gomeroi Elders and community after he failed to intervene when Elders claimed the Maules Creek Coal Project was digging up sacred burial sites. Maules Creek is situated in the Leard Forest in Northern New South Wales, and has been the site of a stoush between anti Coal Seam Gas campaigners and police as bulldozers move in to start work on one of the last major undeveloped multi-seam coal deposits in New South Wales.

Elders have been waiting since November 2013 for a response from Mr Hunt to their request to protect the site under the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Heritage Protection Act, and are now considering legal action.
