Golden Threads is a book which tells the history and stories of Chinese migrants living in rural NSW. Its author, Janis Wilton, travelled the countryside, speaking to the descendants of Chinese people who were brave enough to come to Australia – and venture beyond its cities, in the early days of the 19th century. With their strange food, clothes and beliefs, local people saw them as both an exotic presence and a menacing threat. Cassandra Hill spoke to Janis Wilton – and found out that there’s a lot more to Chinese culture in country towns, than a lone Chinese restaurant serving lemon chicken in the main street.
