A group of 12 indigenous Australian children from the Walkatjurra Cultural Centre in Perth set off one day with a video camera to try their hand at filmmaking. The fruits of their efforts won them the runner up award in the Lonely Planet’s great moments in travel competition. The video called Papinmaru, or ‘goanna’, shows the boys demonstrating how to hunt the reptile with a slingshot made from an old football, how to find the best parts to eat and interviews with traditional food hunters. The project was part of ongoing work to train people living in remote areas to use new technologies.
