Indigenous Livelihood will be the central focus for this year’s Garma festival in Northern Arnhem Land. The annual festival is Australia largest indigenous cultural event and is a vital gathering of indigenous clans celebrating cultural traditions and practices. Garma 2004 will include a ‘Leader and Leadership’ forum to raise issues and ideas about what the future holds for indigenous people. Deputy chairman of the Yothu Yindi Foundation and founder of the Garma Festival Mandawuy Yunupingu told Christine Powell they are looking ahead to the future. Mr Yunipingu was also talking up the tourism value of Garma.
