Future not so bright for iodine-deficient babies

A Monash University study has found iodine deficiency in new born babies is on the rise, and their intelligence may suffer as a result. Iodine is the mineral responsible for healthy brain development, and according to the World Health Organisation, not getting enough could lop off up to 15 points from a person’s IQ. The study tested almost all new born babies in Victoria between 2001 and 2006 and found clear signs that iodine deficiency had worsened.
