Funding shortfall threatens top scientific research facilities

Scientists around the country could soon find themselves unable to use infrastructure worth around $2.5 billion as the federal government refuses to release $150 million in pledged funding to keep them running. A group calling itself the National Research Alliance has called on the government to release the funds so scientists can keep using this vital equipment. Facilities under threat include the Australian Animal Laboratory – which developed the hendra virus vaccine, the Australian National Fabrication Facility, the Australian Synchrotron and many others.
