French, Greek voters slap down austerity policies
Elections in France and Greece have seen voters show the door to politicians who’ve wielded a knife over government spending in recent years. In Greece, the parties who supported the country’s tough bailout package took a hammering, while in France the incumbent president Nicholas Sarkozy was swept aside by Francois Hollande, a socialist candidate who has pledged to fight Europe’s preoccupation with austerity.
Some observers have suggested that voters are just attempting to avoid difficult but necessary government spending cuts. However, two finance experts have told The Wire that voters – at least in France – may be steering Europe towards a better economic strategy.
