The New South Wales government has named former Sydney Lord Mayor and MLA Frank Sartor as the Minister for Redfern-Waterloo. Mr Sartor will oversee redevelopment in the suburb through the Redfern-Waterloo Authority. The plans for the Redfern Waterloo authority include mainly public works projects – new pedestrian and bicycle bridges, a major redevelopment of the railway station, renewing public housing such as The Block, with the centrepiece being a new $1.5 million health centre. Redfern community member Shane Phillips welcomes the appointment, but hopes the plans will not gentrify Redfern. He also wants to see locals employed by the planned public works. Mr Sartor says consultations on the 10 Year Plan for Redfern-Waterloo have already begun.
