Overnight France voted in a new president, Nicolas Sarkozy, with 53 per cent of the vote. On being elected he said “The people have chosen change. France needs it. I will do it.” He plans to overhaul the French economy could lead to a dismantling of the French welfare state and he has been blamed for sparking race riots on 2005, after claiming that diseffected youth in the suburbs of Paris were scum.
