A National Energy Transition Authority long overdue

Eleven coal-fired power facilities shut down from 2013 to 2022; at least seven more are expected to follow suit between now and 2030. Australia is on its way to going off-grid from fossil-based energy consumption but still has no central authority overseeing the energy transition effort across the nation.

Dr Simon Wright from the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney said establishing such authorises is a overdue step the federal government has long ignored. Looking at European countries, national energy transition authorities have been credited as the effective way to ensure that workers exiting the industry are protected.
