A peace deal between environmental groups and the timber industry could signal the end of the drawn-out dispute over Tasmania’s native forests. Over the weekend Julia Gillard was in Hobart, finalising the agreement, which would involve a $276 million commitment to restructure the forestry sector. Some industry workers are breathing a sigh of relief, but the Greens say the deal doesn’t go far enough in protecting old-growth forests.
