But for unions, their concern has been with the 440 families facing an uncertain future. The Manufacturing Union has been in talks with Ford today, but Victorian Assistant State Secretary Leigh Diem, says they are still lacking in detail.

The federal government have defended their $34 million support for the car industry after Ford announced that up to 440 jobs will go from their Geelong and Broadmeadows plants in Victoria. The high Australian dollar, decreasing demand for large vehicles and over-reliance on hand-outs have all been raised in the debate over why car manufacturers, one after another, are shedding jobs.
