Flotilla of Hope
Next Saturday the Flotilla Hope will embark from Sydney, carrying a cargo of teddy bears and other gifts for the 300 asylum seekers detained on Nauru since 2001. It will reach the tiny Pacific nation on June 20 – World Refugee Day. The voyage is supported by a number of groups who oppose the Howard government’s Pacific Solution. They include The Democrats, the Greens, the Teacher’s Federation, Rural Australians for Refugees. They’ve also received international support from New Zealand, the UK, and the First Nations people in America. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to Stavros Georgopolis, crew member taking part in the Flotilla of Hope.
