Three funding packages have been been announced recently by the Prime Minister for Queensland communities to re-build infrastructure and undertake mitigation measures after this year’s floods. However, residents of one of Queensland’s most flood-prone towns are wondering why they haven’t been considered.

The Queensland town of Gympie, 180 km north of Brisbane is recovering from its fourth major flood in twelve months. The Mary River has inundated the central business district, cut the Bruce highway and isolated small rural communities in the area. Residents of Gympie were disappointed that they were not among the Queensland towns to be allocated a funding package in a recent announcement by the Prime Minister. The funds came from the National Flood Mitigation Fund.
