Flag debate fires up in Taree
Debate is raging in Taree on the New South Wales north coast, about whether or not the Aboriginal flag should be flown outside the town council chambers. At a recent council meeting there was a call for it to be flown all year round, not just during special events, but the motion failed. Anglican and Catholic Bishops in the region said flying the flag is a step towards reconciliation, and people have been buying ribbons in red, yellow and black, to show their support for the Aboriginal flag. Reverend Steve Costa of the Taree Uniting Church is one of many who support the proposal, but says some believe a silent majority is against the plan. Council will vote on the issue again tonight.
