Colin Grundy is the irrigator at the very bottom end of the Murray. He says in spite of improved flows since the drought broke, salinity is still a huge problem. He says it could be fixed if some money was spent updating the barrages that hold the sea back from the Lower Lakes.

The barrages which were built in the 1930’s take a day to open and close and are unable to respond to quick weather changes. Colin Grundy says automating them would fix the problem but in spite of 180 million dollars being available to sort out salinity problems neither the state government or the MDBA are willing to take on the project.
