Recently four men were arrested for exceeding the fishing bag limits on the South Coast of NSW. Their case is currently being heard. Fishing has been a traditional way for Aboriginal person’s to feed their families, passed down from their ancestors. The Department of Primary Industries has recognised cultural fishing as a practice that needs to be treated differently than recreational fishing. This is why in 2010 they introduced the Fisheries Management (General) Regulation 2010 and the Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council (AFAC).
