First Aussie Charged Under New Anti-Terror Laws
Izhur ul-Haque – the first person to be charged under Australia’s new anti-terror laws, has been imprisoned in Australia’s highest security jail whilst he waits for his case to be heard. Australian federal police arrested him last week claiming that he’d trained with an illegal terrorist organisation – Lashka e Toiba – for three weeks whilst travelling in Pakistan last year. If found guilty, he could face up to twenty-five years in jail. But does the punishment fit the crime? Christine Baker spoke to Izhar ul-Haque’s lawyer, Adam Houda, Former President of the Islamic Society at the University of New South Wales, Dr Mohammed Waleed Kadous, and President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, Cameron Murphy.
