The Federal Government has announced a new scheme to encourage live organ donations in a bid to reduce waiting lists for organ transplants. The scheme, which will pay employees who want to become live donors, a six-week wage, will be trialled over the next two years at a cost of $1.3 million.

Live organ donations can include donating a kidney, or part of a liver. Lobby groups are adamant that this is not “cash for kidneys”, but ensures donors are not at a financial loss for taking time off work to be a live donor.
