Fiji’s unionists remain defiant after police shut down their national congress meeting on the weekend. The country’s military regime is set to introduce new rules that tightly restrict the activities of unions. But despite the risk of action against them by the regime, top unionists are continuing to campaign against the changes. They say that they had applied for the relevant permits to hold their congress meeting on the weekend, and accuse the government of attempting to bring an end to trade unions in Fiji. Despite the risks of speaking to the media the national Secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Felix Anthony, joined The Wire to give his account of the weekend’s events.
