Fiji army takes control over the streets
The Fijian army has finally acted after weeks of talking up the coup and has effectively taken over the country. The military are out in force on the streets in the capital of Suva and an eerie calm has descended on the country, which is now facing its fourth coup in two decades. The Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has been placed under house arrest, following moves by the President to sign an order allowing the military to unseat him from office. However, according to legal expert and author of the Fijian constitution Professor Brij V Lal, this act by the President was illegal under the constitution. Professor Brij V Lal, is with the Australian National University’s School of Pacific and Asian Studies, he’s currently in Suva and he joined us live on the line.
