Federal government puts in submission to sell uranium to India
Two weeks ago we reported that BHP Billiton wanted to sell copper with uranium in it to China. Now it’s emerged the Federal Government wants to act on its proposal of selling uranium to India, and will push the idea in parliament in the next few weeks. India and the United States have just finalised a nuclear deal, with India promising to use the uranium to generate electricity. However, the country has not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, which under current Australian law means we shouldn’t be selling uranium to them. However, the federal government wants to override that law to make exporting possible. Is it irresponsible for Australia sell this potentially dangerous mineral as though it’s any other commodity? Greenpeace thinks so.
