Residents in New South Wales and Queensland are still facing severe flooding. Thousands have been evacuated and are still unable to return to their homes. There are coal seam gas fields in flooded areas and activists fear the flood water could lead to coal seam gas ponds collapsing or overflowing.

The ponds store water that has been pumped up from the coal seam, and the water is often very saline. Activists worry the water will cause damage if it spills into the environment surrounding the ponds.
