A new book has been released that looks at the trauma of having a loved one detained in a foreign prison. “Families behind Bars” was written by Kay Danes, who was held in a Laos prison for nearly a year. Kay and her husband were abducted, detained and tortured repeatedly and this story is told in a previous book by the author – “Nightmare in Laos”. This interview is about how Dane’s family coped with the detention, her current work for people with post-traumatic stress disorder, and the families of people held in foreign prisons. The interview begins with Danes speaking about the moment she was separated from her children at the Laos Thai border with her husband already in detention.
