Falun Gong Protest China’s Human Rights Record
Late last week, the US attempted to put forward a resolution at the UN Human Rights Commission, which would have increased transparency and accountability of China’s record on human rights. The Chinese delegation categorically rejected the draft resolution tabled by the US alleging that “Such a claim was pure distortion of the facts.”…and through a series of diplomatic ducks and covers, China managed to negotiate it’s way out of this embarrassing situation and the resolution failed. However, while both China and Russia avoided censure, it was decided that North Korea and Belarus will come under close scrutiny. One group particularly affected by China’s clamp down on peoples’ rights to freedom of expression, association and belief are those who practise Falun Gong. On Saturday, Falun Gong practitioners in Sydney protested outside the Sydney Chinese Consulate, delivering a statement responding to the UN ruling on China’s human rights violations. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to John Deller, spokesperson for Falun Dafa in New South Wales about the demonstration on Saturday.
