Eye surgery in remote communities restores more than sight

Every year the Fred Hollows Foundation holds an ‘eye intensive’ in Alice Springs, to perform sight restoring operations on people living in remote Indigenous communities. The recent 2010 ‘eye intensive’ achieved a milestone, as the 500th sight restoring operation was performed. Loss of sight is the main eye health concern of Aboriginal Australians, who are six times more likely to become blind than non-Indigenous Australians.
