The Federal Families Minister, Jenny Macklin, today announced that parents who receive Centrelink in the South East Queensland suburb of Logan will need to prove that their children are enrolled in and regularly attending school. Failure to do this will result in a suspension of welfare payments. The plan is similar to one implemented in some remote Indigenous communities. Opponents labeled that scheme as racist when it was first rolled out and now welfare groups say lower socio-economic groups are being unfairly targeted.
