Ex-Malaysian PM quits in protest of successor’s performance
Malaysia’s embattled ruling coalition is once again in turmoil with the resignation of former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamed from the party. Dr. Mahathir resigned in protest over the leadership of his hand picked successor Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The former PM is calling on Badawi to step down after the party suffered its worst ever election result in March. The stinging barb from his predecessor couldn’t have come at a worse time for Prime Minister Badawi. Internal party elections are on the horizon amid fractures within the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and to make matters worse, a resurgent opposition led by former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is circling.
