Plans to standardise European asylum seeker laws could alienate genuine refugees, according to a consortium of human rights groups. The Common EU Asylum Directive is to be finalised by the first of May when 10 new countries join the EU, but critics claim the plan violates international human rights and refugee laws, and should be scrapped. Christine Baker spoke to Emma O’Brien, spokesperson for the European Commission’s delegation to Australia and New Zealand, and Ben Ward Counsel for the Europe and Central Asia Division of Human Rights Watch.
