Ending the isolation of the elderly
This week, a 79 year-old-woman was found dead in her home on the NSW Central Coast. She had been dead for six months but her body was only discovered when the local post office alerted authorities after noticing her accumulating mail. Her body was only discovered weeks after an elderly Sydney man was also found decomposing in his inner-city apartment. He too had been dead for six months. David Deans from the Council On the Ageing spoke with Tristan Burt about the isolation facing older members of our community and what can be done to prevent elderly people dying alone and without any care. The Department of Aged, Disability and Home Care Director Clare Vernan spoke about the services which the department offers.
