The Australian Electoral Commission today announced the 2016 electoral candidates, revealing Rob Oakeshott will be contesting the seat of Cowper after not contesting his seat of Lyne in the 2013 election.
Yet the lack of female candidates in comparison to male candidates remains an issue despite Australia’s improved awareness of gender inequality in recent years.
In the 44th sitting parliament, there were 32 female senators out of 76 and only 40 female members in the House of Representatives out of a total of 150 seats.
