In a world first, ecstasy has been shown to enhance therapy in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. A team of US scientists lead by Dr Michael Mithoefer showed that when combined with psychotherapy, patients on ecstasy were more likely to show a significant improvement in their condition, compared to those who only received a placebo. But what does the ecstasy do? And how did it make its way from the dance floor to the lab?
