East Timor election bodes well for young democracy

East Timor’s president Jose Ramos Horta has conceded defeat in the country’s presidential elections. It’s not clear yet who will be the country’s next president, as there will need to be a runoff election between the two candidates who received more of the vote than Ramos Horta. But experts are hailing the peaceful election as evidence of East Timor’s growth into a mature democracy. A little earlier Professor Damien Kingsbury of Deakin University joined me on the line from Dili where he’s been observing the election.
