Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton has ignited debate over the particular groups of refugees granted passage to Australia with comments on 2GB last week in which he highlighted the plight of white South African farmers as a possible issue of priority for his department.

The comments have enraged refugee advocates, who have highlighted a lack of action on the large scale humanitarian crises from Myanmar in stark contrast to his proactive approach on a relatively small scale issue.

Questions are now also being asked about Dutton’s power at the top of his super-ministry to cherry pick groups without any parliamentary scrutiny.
