The long running BBC program, Doctor Who, has announced Jodie Whittaker as the 13th actor to take on the role of the Doctor.
Doctor Who follows a stream of sci-fi films and TV shows which have showcased strong female characters in leading roles.
Although rumours of a female Doctor, the lead role in Doctor Who, have been in circulation since 1981, the show has only now, 36 years later, taken on the new direction.
