Australia prides itself on giving everyone a fair-go, but the gap between the rich and the poor seems to be increasing instead of closing. The How Australia Is Faring report was released yesterday and found that there are two groups in our society; one that is doing well and another that appears to be in continuous struggle.

It is the second report from the Social Inclusion Board after the first benchmark report. It discusses Australia’s development indicators and looks at what needs to be improved. The report found that although there were several positive aspects, there is great disadvantage amongst a selected portion of our society. Over 1.5 million people have high financial stress and low economic resources and 15-24 year old make up more than a quarter of all long-term unemployed Australians. The report also confirms that the Indigenous population are the most likely to suffer from multiple forms of disadvantage.
