DIY housing for remote communities takes a little more time
Federal Indigenous Minister Nigel Scullion and NT Chief Minister Adam Giles have announced a new housing program for indigenous communities – but the opposition has heard it all before. They say this could have been implemented some time ago. There is a need for up to 2000 new homes in 73 overcrowded remote communities like the Mutitjulu community around the Uluru/Ayers Rock locale, and this tranche of $350 million will make a start on around 350 new homes and 1000 refurbished ones. The program will actually train and employ people from their own communities to build their own homes. All that is left is to design community space more suited to each locality.
