Direct action on carbon abatement now a bipartisan policy

A point of agreement has broken out between the government and opposition. Amidst the carbon slanging match, there’s been little said about the fact that Julia Gillard’s announcement yesterday brings the government into line with the opposition on the need for direct action policies. While some economists contend that a carbon price is the only thing required to reduce our emissions, both major parties have moved away from that position. Labor, the opposition and the Greens, are all now proposing large direct government spending on new technologies as a necessary part of reducing our emissions.
