Despite the quiet, Philippines in a state of emergency
Most leaders when faced with a military plot to overthrow their government would be satisfied with arresting those involved. Not filipino President Gloria Arroyo. Last Friday, she declared a state of emergency after she discovered that a number of military officers were scheming against her. President Arroyo’s response has been swift, locking up sixteen of those involved and police have overtaken a local newspaper warning other media to take note. Filipino police stated that any media organisations considered, “enemies of the state” will become government run. The story features Marites Vitug of Newsbreak Magazine and Erin Prelypchan of Pacific Strategies and Assessments.
