The protest movement in Australia has seen a long history, as civil liberty groups have strived for change.Protesting has been instrumental in equal pay for women, First Nations land rights and more recently climate action. But, in recent years, state and territory governments across Australia are adopting anti-protest laws, labelled by advocates as ‘draconian’. This week, 60 organisations, including the Human Rights Law Centre and Australian Democracy Network, have called for governments across Australia to adhere to the Declaration of Our Right to Protest.
