Debate rages over danger of Fukushima’s nuclear spent fuel

More than a year after the Fukushima disaster in Japan, concerns about nuclear safety at the Daiichi plant have not gone away. The risk posed by the nuclear spent fuel in Daiichi plant’s reactor 4 has been at the centre of the debate, sparked anew by Japanese Environment Minister Goshi Hosono’s first visit to the site at the weekend. The tour was aimed to allay public concerns after TEPCO said the wall of reactor 4 was buckling. But that hasn’t appeased civil society groups who have sent a petition to the UN calling for an international team to stabilise reactor 4.
