Deaths by natural causes in custody on the rise, say reports

There are renewed calls for deaths in custody to be investigated especially as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to be over-represented in the number of deaths. The most common cause of deaths is by illness or injury while in prison or police custody.
But while “natural causes” might suggest these are simply the forces of nature, experts and activists say that many of these deaths are the result of fundamental problems with the healthcare and prison systems, as well as negligence on the part of the police.
