Deal struck with Indonesia to help save asylum seeker lives

Following a day of important meetings between Indonesian and Australian Government ministers, Australia has agreed to contribute $4.42 million to try and improve Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Authority – BASARNAS.

The pledge comes with the assurance that it will help improve salvaging operations in Indonesian waters in case Australia’s fleets are unable to handle rescue operations at a point in time.But is this contribution worth the money – will it stop the boats – and will it save lives?
