Deadly secrets
The truth about war takes a long time to emerge – especially when the truth is nowhere near as glamorous as the myth. Historian Lynne Silver is fascinated by the secrets of war. Her latest book Deadly Secrets deals with two very daring raids carried out by Australian soldiers during the siege of Singapore in 1943. She exposes the fact that these raids were politically driven and in fact resulted in death and misery for Singaporeans. But operation Jaywick and Rimau were very exciting and straight from the pages of a spy novel – which is why their darker side has taken so long to come out. Lynette says Singaporeans have been grateful to have their side of the story emerge at last.
